“There was once a town in the heart of America where all life seemed to live in harmony with its surroundings.” These are the opening words of a book that caused a worldwide sensation in 1962. It was written by biologist Rachel Carson and titled Silent Spring. What sounds like an idyll in the first sentence turns out to be a dark premonition of what lies in store for humanity if we destroy the natural world around us.

Silent Spring: the birth of the environmental movement

In her famous book, Carson describes a fictional, generic American landscape. Its exceptional beauty entices settlers, who are followed by farmers. As more and more new inhabitants arrive, an insidious blight begins to spread: The green leaves wilt, the birds disappear, the cattle perish in the fields – and finally the people fall ill.

When the book first appeared in print, no-one was talking about purpose-driven marketing. The Cold War was threatening to escalate in Cuba, and the first people were flying rockets into space. In 1969, just a few years after Silent Spring was published, an accident in the Santa Barbara Channel caused a devastating oil spill that had catastrophic consequences for the flora and fauna all along the coast of California. That same year, the UN met in San Francisco and declared a worldwide day of action to highlight the threat of the environmental destruction caused by people – and so, Earth Day was born.

Earth Month: marketing takes on climate change

More than 60 years have passed since the publication of Silent Spring, yet the book has lost none of its relevance. In 2025, scientists talk about the Anthropocene – the age of human influence. Climate change is widely considered to be the greatest threat facing future generations, and marketing has long since been influenced by environmental concerns. Gen Z, in particular, tends to be highly eco-conscious and expects brands to adopt environmentally responsible practices.

As a result, the importance of Earth Day in the marketing world has been steadily growing. Consumers increasingly care about clean supply chains, low-emission production methods and ethical corporate values. The original day of environmental campaigning has since been extended to the whole of April – Earth Month. Many brands now focus their green purpose marketing activities on that month each year.

User-generated content for Earth Day

Viral trends and challenges spread rapidly on social media. So it’s no wonder that Earth Day is extremely popular on digital networks. On TikTok, users share short-form videos themed around sustainability every year. In these clips, they share tips on sustainable fashion, demonstrate eco-friendly life hacks or encourage others to take climate-related challenges. TikTok itself taps into the trend and rewards the most successful posts using the #EarthDay hashtag by helping them go viral – a win-win situation!

Xbox nails Earth Day marketing

Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console is another example of how brands can turn Earth Month in April into a purpose-driven marketing opportunity. The company has pledged to ensure all its components are fully sustainable and carbon neutral by 2030. It celebrated the announcement with a limited-edition green design made from old CDs and other recycled materials. Great job!
