Deutsches Mode-Institut brings digital fashion to Cologne

Digitalization and sustainability are more than just buzzwords for DMEXCO and Deutsches Mode-Institut (DMI) alike. That’s because the fashion sector has also been searching for digital solutions for some time now to avoid overproduction and save physical resources.

Against that backdrop, Koelnmesse, DMI, and the German Association for the Digital Economy (BVDW) are planning an arena to present digital solutions for designing and producing physical clothes. The kickoff event “Digital Fashion – The Phygital Network”, which is mainly but not exclusively designed for fashion industry professionals who play a part in the digital value chain, is set to take place on September 20 at DMEXCO 2023 and will showcase digitalization on the fashion scene.

Dirk Freytag, President of the German Association for the Digital Economy (BVDW), sums it up perfectly: “By hosting ‘Digital Fashion – The Phygital Network’, we’re delighted to be creating a space at DMEXCO for digitalization in the fashion industry. At the BVDW, we actively help shape future-oriented and innovative developments – a mission that is highlighted by our recent initiatives in the fields of retail media, the metaverse, artificial intelligence, and now digital fashion.”

Physical meets digital to become phygital. That’s what “Digital Fashion – The Phygital Network” hopes to create: a blend of online and offline to ensure a seamless crossover between the digital and analog world – for greater efficiency and more sustainability.

Fusion of the analog and digital fashion world

Digital technologies and tools are fueling innovative approaches, and virtual and augmented reality are already taking shopping experiences to the next level. But it doesn’t stop there: countless digital solutions are also being leveraged to design and produce physical clothes.

“Digitalization presents enormous opportunities for optimizing business processes and improving the customer experience in the fashion industry. Companies that seize these opportunities will be able to adapt to evolving market conditions and stay competitive,” predicts Prof. Dominik Matyka, Chief Advisor of DMEXCO.

End-to-end digital fashion – from virtual yarns to avatars

So, what can people visiting DMEXCO 2023 expect from “Digital Fashion – The Phygital Network”? Carl Tillessen, Managing Director of DMI, reveals: “Not only existing digital solutions for designing, producing, and selling physical clothes, but also the emerging range of purely digital fashion require a marketplace that promotes networking and provides a platform for presentation. No marketplace of this kind has existed until now, whether on a national or international scale or on a B2B or B2C level. We’re therefore very pleased to launch this new platform together with Koelnmesse as part of DMEXCO 2023.”

The fashion scene is benefiting hugely from the use of digital technologies, so there is no shortage of best practices for DMI to present at DMEXCO 2023. For example, computer-aided design programs (CAD) are making it really easy to create three-dimensional design drafts in digital form. Digital prototyping and how to save money and resources using virtual modeling will also be explored at the kickoff event in Cologne.

Let us immerse you in the advantages of virtuality in the fashion world and the vast potential of going digital in this field.
