German Digital Award: let the winners inspire you

It’s almost that time again: the hugely popular German Digital Award (DDA) will be celebrating its 10th installment on May 16, 2024. To mark the occasion, we thought we’d showcase the winners of the DDA 2023 and 2022 and how they impressed the jury.

Successful DDA projects from 2022 and 2023

The jury’s statements provide some valuable insights into what made the German Digital Award’s winners stand out in recent years, revealing how exceptional campaigns and products are assessed and what factors determine who comes out on top. In the following, we present three winning projects from selected categories and share the jury’s comments for each one.

MyPiggy: winner of the “Digital Transformation” category in 2022

“Germany’s first smart piggy bank” charmed the jury in 2022. The MyPiggy project was submitted by the agency Cheil Germany and its client VR Family Finance GmbH. The statement from jury member Stefan Mohr (COO, Argonauten GmbH) highlights how the practicality of the digital piggy bank was what clinched the decision:

“The Digital Transformation category is always on the lookout for unique projects that address a challenge that can only be solved digitally. In this case, it was a piggy bank – something that probably anyone with kids has sitting in a corner of their house for every family member to put money in. They may take it to the bank once a year, but otherwise it just gathers dust. We felt the MyPiggy project absolutely deserved the award because it creates an entire ecosystem and teaches both children and their parents about financial topics in a digital way – something we hadn’t yet seen in that form. In our opinion, MyPiggy is not only worth its weight in gold, but has also earned itself a spot in every modern household.”

FAQ YOU: a showstopper at the DDA 2023

FAQ YOU, a sex education platform tailored to young people, picked up awards in not one, but three categories at the DDA 2023: “Branded Content – Digital Magazines” (gold), “Website Content” (silver), and “Website Visual Design” (silver) – much to the delight of the agency behind it, loved GmbH, and its client, the ohhh! foundation. This triple accolade was well deserved according to jury member Alissa Rabe (Creative Strategy & Comms Lead, Creative Works CE, Google):

“FAQ YOU has succeeded in taking sex education away from an outdated classroom setting and communicating information on the target group’s wavelength. The platform makes the topic accessible in a new, innovative, fresh, and tailored way, so it was only right for it to win gold in the Digital Magazines category.”

Struggly: “Best of” winner in 2023

The Struggly platform won big at the German Digital Award 2023 with the “Best of” prize. That’s because it revolutionizes the familiar principle of e-learning. Adopting a playful approach to help learners solve math problems, the platform is mainly aimed at children, but is also great for adults. The jury only had positive things to say about the project, which was developed by the denkwerk agency for its client Boggl Inc. In her then role as CEO of the agency group TWT Digital Group and its parent company Greven Group, Anke Herbener spoke highly of the app:

“The jury really applauded Struggly because it’s a great platform and a brilliant innovation. E-learning has been embraced in Germany for more than 10 years, but we hadn’t seen anything like this before. It is so intuitive and has been designed so effectively that it actually makes learning math fun. It simply wowed us – and by that I don’t just mean us as jury members, but also all of our children, who saw the app, started playing with it, and couldn’t stop! That was the ultimate validation and convinced us to honor it with gold.”

The German Digital Award: digitally revolutionizing well-trodden topics

The above winners of the German Digital Award didn’t reinvent the wheel, they went one better: they digitalized the wheel, added a whole host of new features, and truly reached their target group as a result. So, as you can see, it’s possible to bag yourself a DDA award by revolutionizing an existing idea. That could even be in the “Digital Transformation” category, which is being presented by DMEXCO this year.
